BSO

Bailey's Service Organization (BSO) This organization is a registered student organization (RSO) through the department of Student Life, and is housed in the Bailey Scholars Program. It is open to all students at Michigan State University, even if they are not students in the Bailey Scholars Program. It is dedicated to finding and crafting service opportunities that build community - not just the Bailey community but the larger communities Bailey is connected with (MSU, East Lansing, and beyond).

This past weekend a small group of Bailey Scholars went to work on a Habitat house in Leslie, MI. The house we were working on was not a new house, but rather a restoration project. We worked alongside other volunteers, but also the family that would be receiving the house upon completion. The family is required to put in a certain number of hours of labor on the house, this ensures that once the house is theirs they will know how to maintain and repair any issues they may have.

While our group was there we worked on painting some rooms and ceilings, which required much more finesse than any of us initially expected. Our construction manager, Vince, turned out to be a really nice guy, he ordered some pizza for lunch which we struggled to eat with our paint-covered hands. All and all, we had a blast. You should definitely look out for future BSO opportunities with Habitat for Humanity.

PS: I’ll try to post some pictures when I get a chance.

There are a TON of BSO updates to share with you today!

1. BSO at the Open House: The Bailey Open House is Tomorrow, Wednesday March 24th from 6:30 to 8:30 pm in the Atrium. BSO will be there to kick-off our fund raising for Relay for Life by raffling off some Mystery Bags!?! Raffle tickets are $0.50 or 3/$1.00 and it’s rumored that a vest with an authentic Glenn Earl Sterner III signature has made its way into one of the bags… We will also be announcing the start of our Pieing Contest! Haven’t you always wanted to pie your favorite community member in face? Well now you can – More details at the Open House!

2. Habitat for Humanity: This Saturday March 27th BSO will be working on a habitat house through the Williamston chapter. We will be working on a project in Lesly (not far from East Lansing) doing interior construction. We will be carpooling to the site, so we will meet Saturday morning at Agriculture Hall. If you are interested in going with us, email me back ASAP specify if you are able to drive or if you need a ride to the site.

3. Grilled Cheese and Tomato Soup Lunches: BSO will be hosting two lunches next week, Tuesday and Wednesday March 30th and 31st from 11:30 am to 12:30 pm! We will be set up in the Atrium making grilled cheese sandwiches to order with home made tomato soup. There is a suggested donation of $4.00 for this lunch.

4. Relay for Life: This year Relay for life begins on Friday April 16th at 5:00 pm and is a 24 hour event! Relay for life is an annual event to raise funds and awareness for the American Cancer Society. We have had a lot of fun at this event in the past and plan on doing so again this year! If you are interested in signing up to be on BSO’s team, email me back or look out for a sign-up sheet in the Bailey Space.

As always, we welcome everyone to participate in our events, not just people in Bailey, so feel free to invite your friends and spread the word!

Hey, as I’m sure you all heard, BSO lead its first ever alternative spring break earlier this month. Here is a video I made about my (and our) experiences on the trip. Enjoy!
